For low-income families, there are many
challenges to maintaining a home and providing
the basic necessities for growing kids in
King County, the most expensive county in
Washington state.
To prevent youth and families with children
from becoming homeless, the Youth and Family
Homelessness Prevention Initiative (YFHPI)
intervenes quickly with landlords and housing
providers to help families maintain permanent
housing. This model is implemented through
diverse community partners and families are
offered increasing levels of assistance while
simultaneously supported as they address
their own housing challenges. To help families
maintain long-term housing stability, YFHPI
provides case management combined with
financial assistance where necessary.
From 2017-2020, YFHPI served 10,235
people comprised of 2,852 families and 699
unaccompanied youth. Of the households that
exited the program six months after the exit
date, 96% remained housed without need for
homeless services.
Being part of the solution and supporting housing stability for families is very important. We look forward to teaming up with Best Starts for Kids and other YFHPI agencies to remove housing barriers for the youth and families we are committed to serving. Having a diverse group of community agencies on the ground means more opportunities to help many youth and their families. Although we know all may not be helped we are grateful many will be reached because there are 18 agencies, King County (YFHPI) and Best Starts for Kids working towards and supporting youth and families housing needs.
